On May 1st, 2009, the MPICT Advisory Panel met from 11am to
1:30 pm at the City College of San Francisco Downtown Campus
for an interactive working session with the
California
Community College Economic and Workforce Development Program
(EWD)
Centers of Excellence (COE),

MPICT is working with EWD Centers of Excellence to produce an
ICT Environmental Scan, including a study of the ICT workforce
in California.
The meeting was devoted to giving COE experts an opportunity
to learn from MPICT’s Advisory Panel ICT experts as much as
possible about the environments and workplaces for ICT and how
to best study them.
James Jones introduced everybody and described the value to
all in having an ICT focused environmental scan for
California, and COE’s Phil Jordan facilitated the meeting.

ICT is an international standard term and industrial activity
category not yet widely used in the U.S., which typically
studies direct ICT equipment and service provider subsets of
ICT only. Some literature suggests as much as 80% of ICT
employment is outside of traditional IT industries, not
adequately counted in current studies.

Because there is so much variation in job titles and how
organizations treat ICT, we agreed it would be most valuable
to conduct a study based on ICT job functions, and we worked
on identifying those functions, adapting previous National
Skill Standards System work.

The meeting was hosted by a CCSF hospitality program, and
lunch was provided in the Educated Palate restaurant by CCSF
culinary arts students.
MPICT and EWD COE are continuing to collaborate on developing
this study. Thank you advisors!
