Saturday, March 26, 2011, MPICT Regional Partner Ohlone
College gathered over one hundred students from thirteen
different high schools for the 11th Annual Silicon Valley
StRUT Competition.
StRUT, Students Recycling Used Technology, is a non-profit
program that refurbishes and upgrades used computers for use
in schools. Founded by Intel, StRUT’s main goal is to teach
students valuable technical skills while refurbishing
computers that are placed into other secondary schools. This
productive method of recycling also prevents hazardous waste
generated by computers from going into the landfills. The
annual competition allows students from StRUT member schools
to display their knowledge and skills in the IT field.
The competition consisted of four main components:
-
Computer Build, which tested problem solving, mechanics,
process, efficiency and teamwork in disassembling and
reassembling computers;
-
Presentation, where each team presented their work to the
judges and were evaluated on their ability to communicate
content and knowledge, organization, use of visual aides
(PowerPoint), delivery, and teamwork;
-
Troubleshooting, where students had to troubleshoot a
Small Office Home Office (SOHO) scenario using Packet
Tracer for IT Essentials, and
-
Written Exam of 50 multiple choice questions based on A+
certification content.

There was also a school vs. school “Quiz Bowl” to conclude
the competition, also based on A+ certification content.
Quiz Bowl results:
-
First Place: Irvington High School
-
Second Place: Mission High School
-
Tied for Third: Santa Rosa and American High Schools
Over forty volunteers, most of whom are professionals in the
field, and others who are Ohlone students in the IT training
program – CNET, served as judges. Judges worked in teams of
two, one person from industry and one from education, with
each judge team scoring one team of three students.

During the event, Ohlone was recognized with an Innovators
Award from
www.WhyITNow.org for outstanding work in support of the
Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) Pathways.
