Building ICT Pathways from K-12 College

If you are a high school or community college administrator or ICT teacher, please join us Friday, May 6th, 2011, from 9am to 2pm, in the Ohlone College Boardroom for a symposium on “Building ICT Pathways from K-12 to College.” This event is being co-hosted by MPICT, Ohlone College, Cisco Systems, the California Department of Education and WhyITNow/WhyCTENow.

We need a skilled ICT workforce to realize the benefits of ICT in our workplaces, economies and communities. To get one, we need not only to do a good job educating students in community college ICT programs, we also need to collaborate to attract and serve K-12 system students with interests in ICT, so they have exposure to ICT and its many educational and career opportunities, and so they have opportunities to learn ICT and prepare themselves for those pathways.

Over 10 years, Ohlone College has built an exceptional IT pathway from K-12 to college in its region. Among many successful pathways elements, Ohone has developed middle school summer camps, a 9th grade introductory course, high school CTE courses, summer boot camps, a computer recycling program, field trips in Silicon Valley and opportunities for high school students to take community college classes.

This symposium will present successful pathway building experiences, from both college and K-12 perspectives, and it will explore a variety of workshop topics, like:

  • Building Middle School ICT Summer Camps

  • Developing High School Introductory ICT Courses

  • Digital Literacy

  • Creating High School ICT Boot Camps

  • Building Pathways with Cisco Networking Academies

  • Building Dual/Concurrent Enrollment Relationships

  • Meeting High School A-G Requirements with ICT

  • Distance Learning Between High School and College

We would really encourage representatives of community colleges and neighboring high schools to come to this event together. We will help you understand options for building pathways between your programs and for getting support in those efforts.
