U.C. admissions for freshmen, undergraduate transfer and graduate students are competitive, based on academic requirements, academic performance, standardized test scores and personal situations. Tuition, fees and cost of living for California residents are about $25,000 per year. For non-residents combined costs are about $45,000 per year, with a possibility of establishing California residency to reduce costs in future years.

An excellent strategy for affordably acquiring a U.C. degree is to attend a California community college and transfer to a U.C. as a junior. All U.C. campuses give junior-level community college students first priority over other transfer applicants, even over UC's own intercampus transfer students. Seven UCs offer guaranteed admission to California community college students who meet requirements under the Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) program. Articulation agreements with all California community colleges identify which courses satisfy individual UC campus requirements, and all campuses offer a variety of programs to support transfer admission for community college students and to help transfer students earn their UC degrees once enrolled. 8 of 10 California Community College applicants are qualified and admitted, and nearly a third of all UC bachelor's degrees go to transfer students.

Careful planning and informed advice are highly recommended. Information on Computer Science transfer pathways is a good place to start. The ASSIST tool is also very useful. Finally, all California community colleges have knowledgeable counselors on U.C. transfer issues. Check with community college ICT related programs for ICT courses that transfer to UC ICT related majors.
