Because
ICT is technical and very complex, involves math and science,
has so many different sub-fields, is handled so differently by
different schools, changes so rapidly, and was not really
taught when many were in school, many high school, college and
career counselors do not understand ICT well.
That is
not really anyone’s fault. Nobody has really taken the time to
figure it all out and give them the tools and training they
need to adequately understand ICT, ICT career and job
opportunities and ICT educational opportunities.
As a
society, we would be better off, however, if we did a better
job of helping high school, college and career counselors do a
better job helping students and job seekers in ICT fields. If
students and prospective employees are not able to navigate
complex educational and career pathways, we as a society lose,
because we as a society depend on ICT infrastructure and
competencies for our productivity and economic health.
