Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) Educator Resources - Society for Science and the Public (SSP)

The Society for Science & the Public (SSP) is a nonprofit membership organization that sponsors some of the most widely respected programs for student scientists. Do you have students who are talented and motivated? Do you want to teach your students about the latest scientific discoveries? SSP programs and publications might be a great match for your needs. Here’s what you’ll find at their website.

Intel International Science and Engineering Fair

The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) is the largest international science competition for students in grades 9 through 12. Each year, millions of students in over 50 countries conduct and showcase scientific research in school, local, and regional Intel ISEF-affiliated science fairs. More than 1,500 winners advance to the Intel ISEF, where they have the opportunity to compete for $4 million in scholarships and prizes. The judges at Intel ISEF are doctoral-level scientists.

Check out the Intel ISEF Affiliated Fairs web page to find a local competition that can qualify your students to participate in the Intel ISEF. The Intel ISEF section of the SSP website also provides information about becoming a judge and the rules and guidelines for participating in the Intel ISEF.

Intel Science Talent Search

The Intel Science Talent Search (Intel STS) is a competition for U.S. high school students who have completed independent science research projects. Each participating student submits a written description of their project, and an entry form that documents his or her excellence and accomplishments. The top 40 Intel STS finalist receive cash awards from $7,500 up to $100,000 and an Intel-powered laptop computer. Each of the top 300 semifinalists also receives $1,000. Seven STS alumni have been selected as Nobel Laureates.

The Intel STS section of the SSP website provides information for both participating students and their teachers and mentors.

SSP Fellows Program

The SSP Fellows Program provides funding and training to U.S. math and science teachers who serve under-resourced students. Fellows are empowered to teach their students how to conduct independent scientific research.

Publications

SSP publishes Science News, a colorful biweekly magazine that summarizes recent research findings and reports across all scientific fields. Science News for Kids is written for 9 to 14 year-olds. It contains games and teaching resources in addition to stories about recent scientific research.

There are many ways to get involved in SSP’s important work. You can join them as a member, volunteer for one of their programs, make a donation, or become a sponsor.
