Are your IT students talented? Are they ready for a challenge?
The Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (CCDC) is a system of
events at which teams of students compete by successfully
assuming administrative and protective duties for a simulated
commercial network. The CCDC system includes eight regional
competitions, the winners of which advance to the National
Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (NCCDC). The regional
event for teams from California, Nevada, and Arizona compete
is the
Western Regional Cyber Defense Competition.
Teams can consist of up to eight full time students, including
a maximum of two graduate students. Each team is provided with
an identical set of hardware and software. They are scored
based on their detection and response to security threats
while they maintain their systems’ business services. An
automated scoring engine is used to assess the functionality
and availability of each team’s services. And, volunteers
provide security threats by trying to break into each team’s
systems. In sum, the competition provides students with a
realistic experience administering and protecting a corporate
network so they can become more familiar with real world
challenges.
Visit the NDCCDC website for details about the competition’s
rules and
schedule, and to learn about the
CCDC regional competition for your college or university.
You can also
contact NDCCDC if you are interested in being a
volunteer at the national competition.
