Leading Change in Education
The Center for Occupational Research and Development (CORD)
develops programs that empower faculty and help students
achieve success in academics as well as their careers. CORD’s
programs are designed in collaboration with workforce training
programs, school districts, consortia, colleges and states
nationwide. CORD’s staff works with faculty and administrators
at partner organization to address specific challenges.
CORD specializes in science, mathematics, and technology
education. Their programs employ a contextual approach to
teaching and learning. In other words, students learn in a
context that represents the real world situations in which
their knowledge can be applied.
CORD provides the following five types of services:
|

Curriculum Development Services |
CORD
has developed
standards-based curricula in mathematics,
science, and a wide variety of technical fields.
They can provide curriculum frameworks, detailed
lesson plans, and complete online or print-based
instructional programs.
|
|

Professional Development Programs |
CORD’s
professional
development programs advocate a constructivist
approach to teaching through the application of
contextual learning principles. Thus, teachers are
enabled to increase student achievement and
engagement through hands-on activities,
problem-solving, and collaborative and
project-based learning.
CORD delivers professional development through
both on-site workshops and online, facilitator-led
courses.

practitioner networks that facilitate
collaborations among diverse groups in attaining
mutually beneficial goals. Examples of national
networks for educational improvement and
innovation established by CORD include:
-
The National Career Pathways Network
-
National Coalition of Advanced Technology Centers
-
National Center for Optics and Photonics Education
(OP-TEC)

|

Career Pathways Advocacy |
Through its programs and publications, CORD
promotes educational systems that are rigorous,
relevant, and prepare both students and adult
workers for career success. Their
Career Pathways Advocacy promotes instruction
that is better aligned with workforce requirements
through outreach to call on K-12 educators,
community colleges, employers, community leaders,
and policymakers. |
|

International Outreach |
CORD provides
governments and educators around the world
with tools to assess the status of their
educational and workforce development systems. The
CORD staff has worked in Brazil, Dominican
Republic, Chile, Mexico, Malaysia, Philippines,
Turkey, and other countries. |
