ABET accreditation is a voluntary, peer-review
process that assures that programs in applied
science, computing, engineering, and technology
meet quality standards established by the
profession in which they prepare students.
The process of accreditation begins with
requesting a program evaluation from ABET.
Each program then completes a
self-study questionnaire as it conducts an
internal evaluation. Following your self-study, an
evaluation team of volunteers from academe,
government, and industry visit your campus to
review course materials and student work,
interview faculty and students, and clarify any
issues that arose in the self-study. The
evaluation team produces a report which allows you
to correct any misinterpretations and address any
shortcomings. Then, a final report along with an
accreditation recommendation is provided to an
ABET commission for a vote on the accreditation of
your program.
ABET has four commissions, Applied Science,
Computing, Engineering, and Technology.
