Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) Education at San Jose City College

Celebrating an existence that spans three-quarters of a century, San José City College (SJCC) provides San Jose and Milpitas residents with community college education of the highest quality.   From its modest beginnings in 1921, SJCC has delivered its educational mission with integrity and vitality.  For many years, San José City College operated in downtown San Jose.  San Jose Unified School District took over the College’s operation in 1953, moving it to its present Moorpark Avenue location.  A decade later, an independent San Jose Junior College District was created. In 1958, the name was changed to San José City College.  SJCC serves about 10,000 students a year, half of which are full time, with about 120 faculty.

Students earning Certificates and/or an Associate Degree in Computer Applications can expect a smooth school-to-work transition.  Students will acquire skill sets in Microsoft Office Applications, Internet research skills, multi-tasking, written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work well in a fast-paced business environment.  The majority of computer application classes are held in a self-paced learning lab environment and offered on an open entry-exit basis.  Open enrollment occurs until the 12th week of the semester.  Multiple courses can be taken until that date.  For more information, please call (408) 298-2181 x 3241 or email.

SJCC’s Computer Information Systems (CIS) department offers degrees and certificates in five major areas: Network Administration, Web Developer, Computer Programming, MS.NET Application Development, and JAVA Enterprise Programming .  The degree programs require a minimum of 60 units, of which at least 36 units must be in a selected CIS major, and at least 24 units must be General Education units.  Several levels of certificates are available in each of the five areas.  The certificate programs can be completed without the General Education requirements.  For more information, please call (408) 298-2181 x 3235 or email.

The Media Arts program is a unique, interdisciplinary approach to the converging fields of journalism, communication and new media technology. It responds to the need for people skilled in effective communications in all levels of society including industry, education, art and music, and the public arena.  The Certificate of Achievement level 1 provides a core foundation of coursework for further study, and emphasizes the integration of visual literacy, communication media and technology, and critical thinking.  The certificate can also offer a level of competency in communications media for those who are pursuing other fields of study, or for those in the workplace who need communications skills training to perform their job function or to assume additional job responsibilities.  For more information, please call (408) 298-2181 x 3235 or email.
