Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) Education at Maui Community College

Maui Community College (MCC) serves the educational needs of residents of the three islands comprising Maui County: Molokai, Lana'i, and Maui.  The College is an outgrowth of the Maui Vocational School, established in 1931. Maui Technical School was incorporated into the statewide community college system under the University of Hawai'i on July 1, 1965, and transferred from jurisdiction of the Department of Education to the University of Hawai'i.  Maui Community College is one of seven community colleges in the University of Hawai'i System and part of a ten campus University of Hawai'i System.  MCC networked faculty to terminals connected to a DEC VAX Computer and established the first higher education cable television channel delivering instruction to its tri-isle service area in 1983.  By 1988, the college constructed a tri-isle interactive television system.  With the completion of Ka'a'ike Instructional Telecommunications facility in 2001, MCC opened its television and audio studios, digital media and electronic and computer engineering technology labs, and seven interactive TV classrooms.  The college additionally began a National Center of Excellence for High Performance Computing, applying personal computer cluster solutions to problems requiring high speed processing.  Students in Maui CC’s Electronic and Engineering program now have access to a Supercomputer, thanks to a gift from IBM.  We are the only community college in Hawaii to have this technology available to students.  The College encompasses 78 acres at the Kahului site.  The student population is about 3,000.  If you live on Molokai, Lanai, or the communities of Hana and West Maui, access to higher education no longer means a move or a long commute.  MCC provides access to numerous associate degree programs, non-credit courses through VITEC and bachelors and masters degree programs through the University of Hawai’i Center, Maui.  Classes are taught on-site, via cable, interactive TV, and the internet. To find out current course offerings or more information visit the center’s website or contact the centers directly.

MCC’s  Electronic & Computer Engineering Technology (ECET) program provides students with the skills and knowledge required for entry level employment within the high-technology industry as electronic technicians, telecom technicians, network administrators, Windows/Unix system administrators, or high performance computer technicians.  The ECET program offers a career-ladder with three levels of competency:

1)   A Certificate of Completion (CC) for course work in Electronics and Computer fundamentals.

2)   A Certificate of Achievement (CA) with math, physics, and computer science basics.

3)  An Associate in Science (AS) degree that provides training in:

•     Electronic Engineering Technology, which includes electro-optics instrumentation, adaptive optics for astronomical applications detectors, amplifiers, power supplies, computer hardware, and robotics; or

•      Computer Engineering Technology, which includes Windows and Unix system administration, routers, hubs, switches, and High Performance Computing (HPC) Technology, which focuses on installation, maintenance, and programming of HPC cluster computers.
