Information and
Communication Technologies (ICT) Education at College of Marin

College of Marin (COM)
was originally known as Marin Junior College when
established in 1926. In 1985, College of Marin
merged with Indian Valley College, providing Marin
county residents with two campuses, the original
campus in Kentfield and the Indian Valley Campus
in Novato. The two campuses serve a county
population of approximately 250,000 residents.
Approximately 9,000 credit and noncredit students
enroll each fall and spring semester. The College
has earned a reputation as a quality educational
institution, providing a pathway for achievement
and success for students of all ages and from all
walks of life. It provides thirty-five two-year
vocational and career programs, as well as basic
skills, English as a Second Language (ESL)
education and community education classes. The
College's workforce preparation programs provide
the necessary skills for success in a globally
competitive workforce environment. Whether the
goal is career advancement, career change, or
entering the workforce for the first time, the
College offers a range of programs to help

The
Business and Information Systems
department
Computer Information Systems curriculum is
designed to provide education for computer-related
careers, professional advancement, and transfer
preparation. Courses provide hands-on computer
use that emphasizes development of the skills
necessary for employment and personal use of
computers. Program specialties include desktop
network, desktop publishing, microcomputer
manager, and microcomputer programmer. CIS offers

The
Business and Information Systems
department
Business Office Systems curriculum is designed
to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes
needed by workers in today’s automated offices.
Students can acquire training and skills to enter
the job market, update knowledge and skills to
reenter the marketplace, or retrain in order to
maintain a present position or obtain a promotion.
The skills developed in this curriculum are also
useful to students who wish to enrich their
business and computer expertise for personal use.
Courses
emphasize skill development in business office
systems with specialties available in the medical
and office management areas. Most courses include
hands-on computer use, so students learn computer
skills as well as the individual course material.

The
Physical Sciences Department houses the
Computer Science program at College of
Marin. Computers play an integral role in many
professional fields today: architecture and
design, graphics and animation, writing and
editing, physical and social sciences, research
and medicine, and many more. In computer science
classes, students learn skills and applications
that prepare them to enter the field as a software
or hardware programmer, an application designer,
or as an expert end-user.
There are two educational programs/AS Degrees
available to students interested in the computer
sciences: (1) electrical engineering and computer
science; and (2) information science and software

Career Education department offers a program
of
Electronic Technology. Courses in this area
provide a limited introduction to electronics and
telecommunication technologies. They are designed
to equip the student with basic terminology,
concepts, and some measurement and diagnostic
