Truckee Meadows Community College, Computer Technologies (CT)
Department Faculty, MPICT Regional Partner
During
his career, Bill Doherty has had the chance to experience
several of the jobs that fall under the umbrella of ICT. He
started his career as a programmer, and soon became intrigued
by security in the digital world. In 1981, he held one of the
first IT security certificates as a Certified Information
Systems Auditor. As he worked with executives on security, he
decided to pursue management and spent four years managing a
data center and, later, a team of software developers. When he
returned to school for his MBA, he recognized that higher
education was his calling. He joined Truckee Meadows Community
College (TMCC) in Reno, Nevada in 1990, where he specializes
in networking technologies and teaches a variety of ICT
courses.
Dr. Doherty has been an advocate for partnerships between
industry and education from the beginning of his career. As an
undergraduate, he landed his first programming job by asking a
guest speaker from industry if he had an opening for an
intern. As an IT manager, Bill worked with the University of
Nevada and Truckee Meadows Community College to identify
curriculum changes to support local industry. In 1989, he led
a successful effort to rally local businesses and IBM to
donate a $250,000 mainframe system to TMCC to support those
curriculum changes. Since that time, Bill has continued to
work with leaders from business and industry to provide
current and relevant curriculum, and employment opportunities
for students.
Any free time and extra money is spent traveling the world and
exploring the outdoors with his wife. Since 2007, Bill has
also been sharing his outdoor explorations with his “little
brother” from Big Brothers Big Sisters.
